Maxximus G-Force: First (and Last) Glimpse of a 1600-hp Beast - Car News



A gearhead fairy tale: a wistful mechanic and a wealthy benefactor create a 1600-hp Ultima-based road demon.
BY STEVE SILERThe invitation was brief, but intriguing. “Philanthropist and businessman David McMahan unveils the world’s newest, fastest, street legal supercar, officially certified by the World Records Academy. Please join us for breakfast and viewing this remarkable, beautifully crafted, one-of-a kind car, harnessing over 1600 horsepower.” Three eye-popping numbers that suggested that, if not the fastest, the G-Force might be one of the quickest cars in the world: 0–60 in 2.134 seconds; 0–100 in 4.541 seconds; 0–100–0 in 8.861 seconds.
We’re not sure if there is a real good way to harness 1600 hp, but if any car is going to be able to snatch “world’s fastest” status from the current titleholder, it’s going to need all the horsepower it can get. The record is currently held by, depending on who you ask, either the 1001-hp, 253-mph Bugatti Veyron 16.4 or the 1183-hp SSC Ultimate Aero (built by Shelby Supercars), the latter of which the Guinness Book of Records certified as the world’s fastest production car when it hit 256 mph in 2007. The 2009 Ultimate Aero now makes 1287 hp, for what it’s worth.
We arrived at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, stood around the car’s satin-draped form, and waited, ready with questions. What is Maxximus? Where is it based? What exactly is under the hood of the G-Force? How much will it cost? How many will be built? And of course, when do we get to drive it? Within minutes, the regal Dr. McMahan wafted in, accompanied by Marion Kirby, the builder of the G-Force, to give us the answers.
The Ultimate Ultima
How does one build a car that beats the fastest cars in the world? Well, for an outfit as “mini” as Maxximus, starting with a solid basis was key. Kirby chose as his starting point Great Britain’s featherweight, mid-engine Ultima GTR720, which has been available as a kit or turnkey car in more or less the same form for a quarter of a century. The Ultima GTR is hardly new, but it’s always been quick. Our most recent GTR test happened way back in April 2000. An expensive car at $152,150 as tested, that example’s 345-hp Corvette-sourced LS1 V-8 powered the 2314-pound skateboard to a 3.3-second 0–60 time and an 8.2-second 0–100 time. It also pulled 0.98 g on the skidpad. Those are all impressive figures, even today. The later GTR720 uses a 720-hp small-block Chevrolet engine to generate acceleration figures that are among the best of all “production” street cars in history: 0–60 in 2.6 seconds, 100 mph in 5.3 seconds, and 0–100–0 in 9.4 seconds, according to Ultima.

World's cheapest car set for production. Emphasis on "cheap"


Here's a good way to build a cheap car: take out the airbags, power steering, rear seat belts, anti-lock brakes, and most cylinders, all frills, and other standard safety equipment. Do that and you'll end up with a four-door, four-seater, 33-hp 2-cylinder car that you can sell to a hungry market with decidedly low expectations for about 100,000 rupees ($1,988). Which still seems kind of expensive when you consider that you can buy a new Kia Rio for $10,000.
Often called the Model T of the 21st century, the Tata Nano is expected to go into production for the growing Indian automotive market on March 23, with orders being accepted in April.
According to the company's website, "The Nano's safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements." That may be true for India, but lack of seatbelts in the rear is enough to bar it from the U.S. market.
The EU may have more strict emissions standards that the U.S., but apparently tragically weaker safety standards, and the vehicle is expected to retail in Europe for 5,000 euros ($6,347) next year.
While Tata says it conforms with Euro IV emission standards, it doesn't say much in terms of crash tests. While we don't know what a Nano vs. Land Rover side impact test will look like, its diminutive size and weight (1300 lbs) means it it probably conforms nicely to European pedestrian safety laws,

An eye on Detroit: NAIAS '09 - Day 1

Keeping an eye on the competition in Cobo today... guess which manufacturer's car this is from? Judging by the response of some auto makers, you'd have thought this year's Detroit autoshow wouldn't be worth the effort. However, judging by twitter chatter, mainstream news coverage and the response of people on the ground, hell hasn't actually frozen over (its only Detroit's pavements) and those that ventured to the Cobo Hall today for the start of the North American International Auto Show 2009, were rewarded with some treats and surprises. This show was always going to be about certain North American manufacturers proving to a skeptical American public they deserved bailout money, and for every other manufacturer, a chance to prove the auto industry wasn't actually on its knees, and could still deliver the vision, and kick-ass products that would make people open their wallets. But they finally agreed on “tough but not rough”. Not rough and unrefined like a traditional agricultural workhorse but sleek and stylish with the polish of high-end quality products.

Car sellers looking to make a deal

Amidst December’s heavy snow, Ford of Kirkland
dealer Jim Walen was busy brushing off his cars
and trucks and directing a snowplow to clear a path
for potential customers to reach his business.
Faced with fewer buyers with the economy in
recession, Walen and Ford Motor Company are
pulling out all the stops to get car and truck buyers
in the door. A combination of aggressive vehicle
pricing and financing, a “fuel-efficient” F-150 truck that gets up to 21
miles a gallon and award-winning customer service are the strategy
he hopes will get the dealership increasing sales again.
“There’s not a better time to buy a vehicle,” he said.
Nationally, Ford is doing better than U.S. competitors GM and
Chrysler and passing on emergency federal loans to stay afloat. But
nearly all auto retailers worldwide are seeing a steep downturn.
Ford’s sales were down 40 percent in January from a year earlier.
Weak consumer spending and tight credit markets are spurring the
auto makers to offer enticing deals and affordable loans to attract
new customers. Ford is projecting sales of around 12 million vehicles
for this year.
Back at Ford of Kirkland, Walen said the company’s latest promotion
called “Employee Plus” that ended Feb. 4 was successful. He said buyers were offered a discount “employee
price,” plus additional cash back rebates on a number of car models. They also offered zero-percent interest
financing for the new F-150 truck for customers who chose not to take the added cash back.
Long-term, Walen is relying on brand loyalty, customer service and a diverse range of vehicles that will sell in
a tough market. One of those new vehicles is the 2010 hybrid Ford Fusion (at 41 miles per gallon/highway),
designed to compete with Toyota’s hybrid Prius and Camry. With 27 of this year’s Fusion model still on his lot
(24 mpg/hwy), Walen said it’s time to make a deal.
“You start with the $27,000 price, employee pricing takes it down to $2,400 plus you get a discount on top of
that,” he explained.
The combined savings bring the total cost of the compact car down to $21,000.
Financing through their lending arm to customers with credit scores of 620 or better is also keeping Ford of
Kirkland chugging along. His top salesman, Todd Ireland, inked a contract for a used XLT Ford Ranger with
Issaquah resident Loren Matteson on a recent afternoon. Aretired union employee from a rock and gravel
plant, the 71-year-old and his wife have a steady retirement income and own their own home and qualified for
a low-rate loan.
“Financing is a big component of our business,” he said. “Now more than ever.”
Matteson said he was looking for an American made truck with four-wheel drive that could make it up his
steep driveway. A mixed blessing, the weather actually helped spur truck sales, Walen said, where Ford has
done comparatively well.
“Teamsters buy American,” Ireland added.
Taking care of their customers is also a central part of Walen’s business strategy. Service director Tom
Olsen, was recently recognized for the dealership’s top customer satisfaction ratings for the four year
running.
But doing business in the recession economy has challenged Ford of Kirkland to do more with less. New
numbers are showing city sales-tax receipts are trending sharply downward, off 19 percent for November.
Walen has seen sales from his lot plummet 25 percent from 2007, forcing him to cut back on his staff. Two
years ago, he had 92 employees. Today, he’s got 65 full-time staff. He’s also had to deal with an additional
$5,000 more in local business-taxes and set to go higher if he hires back employees.
“We wish they’d try to help business, rather than make us less competitive,” he said.
But there is a silver lining – as demand shrinks, Ford of Kirkland has seen his share of the market grow. They
sold 822 vehicles last year, the most in the state of Washington out of 74
Ford dealerships.
Sitting at his desk adorned with a large red “Easy Button,” Walen was confident that the investment made in
his customers through deep discounts, financing and customer service has its dividends in the long run.
“Taking care of every single customer pays you back down the road,” he said. “Big time.”

This was just in the news today.

“Jim Farley, Ford's global marketing chief, said Wednesday that seasonally adjusted retail sales demand has held steady for the past four months. Meanwhile, the country's used car market has come "roaring back" since January.”

We have been ahead of this curve. That may be one of the biggest reasons Jim had put Ford of Kirkland at the top of the Washington Ford sales winning awards 4 years in a row and getting the #1 Ford volume award for 2008. We are looking forward to a great 2009.

Ford's Warranty Repair Costs Decline Further in 2008 as Quality Continues to Improve
- Ford has reduced its worldwide warranty repairs costs by $1.2 billion in the past two years.
- The warranty repair rate for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles in the U.S. is now almost 50 percent lower than it was in 2004.
- Since 2005, each new model from Ford has consistently delivered better quality than the models they replaced.


DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) steady vehicle quality improvement in recent years is beginning to translate into significant savings for the company and far fewer trips by customers to the repair shop.

In the past two years alone, Ford has reduced its warranty repairs costs by $1.2 billion, according to the latest company figures. These savings can be attributed to four straight years of quality improvements on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. Ford's initial quality is now in a virtual tie with Honda-Acura and Toyota-Lexus-Scion for the 2008 model year, according to the latest U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study.

Ford strives to be best in class in every phase of vehicle development - from design to pre-delivery - internal measures continue to show the company is making significant quality strides.

For example:

-- The warranty repair rate for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles in the United States is now almost 50 percent lower than it was in 2004.

-- Ford F-Series Super Duty and Lincoln Mark LT rank atop their respective segments with fewest "things gone wrong" (TGW) and in customer satisfaction.

-- Ford Mustang GT500 had the least number of TGWs among sports cars.
-- Overall, 18 of 24 Ford domestic brand vehicles posted TGW improvements.


"Ford is following a set of standardized processes around the world in product development, manufacturing and purchasing with a discipline this company has never seen," said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality.

Continued Improvements

The drive to improve quality is most evident during a new-model launch. Since 2005, each new model from Ford has consistently delivered better quality - as measured by warranty rates and things-gone-wrong metrics - than the models they replaced.

"The last 24 months have revealed some of our best quality results," said Curt Yun, director, Global Warranty. "Our new models have been achieving continuously declining warranty repair rates and lower warranty costs, as a direct result of our overall quality improvements."

In the U.S., for example, owners of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles have reported fewer concerns at three years in service for each of the past five years, according to the Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey, compiled for Ford by the research firm RDA Group.

"We've reached the point where our initial quality is second to none among the full-line manufacturers," said Fowler. "We expect that high quality to be reflected in future high-mileage surveys as our new models age."

Built-in Design Quality

Ford's Global Product Development System ensures quality is built-in early in the process. It starts with the company's commitment to develop and implement consistent standardized engineering processes. By fully utilizing Computer Assisted Design toolsets, Ford is signing off on all aspects of its designs even before the first prototype is built.

Ford's design and engineering analysis processes make it possible for problems that previously might not have surfaced until launch to be flagged and corrected in the virtual world. Ford uses cutting edge virtual tools to verify up to 40,000 design standards in its Virtual Engineer Lab. Virtual technology also is used to confirm that the product can be manufactured with quality in the assembly plant for which it is slated.

Manufacturing Quality Process

Ford also provides assembly plant teams the necessary tools to deliver quality in the manufacturing process. For example, the company's Quality Operating System (QOS) is critical for identifying and correcting problems within the manufacturing facilities.

QOS is implemented in each plant by Variability Reduction Teams (VRT) - cross-functional groups of engineers, plant management and product specialists, including the company's most skilled problem solvers who've been trained through Six Sigma. Each team is assigned to one of 12 vehicle subsystems crucial to customer satisfaction, such as paint or body interior, and examines every detail, looking for imperfections so slight that even the untrained eye, or ear, could not detect them.

For example, Ford's 2010 Taurus was subjected to rigorous testing for squeaks and rattles at each design phase. Every inch of the vehicle was scrutinized for unwanted noise from the outside in, down to the sound of the Easy Fuel(TM) Capless Fuel Filler door when it's closed.

Another example includes the development of Ford's new fuel-efficient 3.5- liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. By the time the first twin-turbocharged, direct injection engine is decked to a 2010 Lincoln MKS this summer at the Chicago Assembly Plant, the equivalent of more than one-million grueling test miles will have been logged by EcoBoost prototypes.

Ford also uses a process called Early Claims Binning to help streamline communications about potential quality issues between plants and dealerships. Warranty claims are fed to the assembly plant every day where the issue is dissected and either traced back to the installation process and addressed on-site or fed back to the design engineer for resolution in design.

Customer-driven Quality

Ford's commitment to deliver the best quality possible for its customers is unwavering and the company is committed to pushing its quality levels even higher.

As Ford's newest vehicles hit the road, company officials expect warranty claims to continue their downward trend.

"I see the recent $1.2 billion in worldwide warranty cost savings as a compelling reason to continue down this path," Yun said. "Instead of setting aside those funds to fix cars, we'd much rather invest it in exciting product programs for our customers."

Ford's commitment to world-class quality extends beyond preventing things that go wrong. Customer-driven product features, such as fuel economy, craftsmanship, and quiet interiors are designed into the vehicle to deliver an exceptional and affordable ownership experience.
